MARBLES

ANONYMOUS

I’ve been on a hunt.
I’ve been searching for my name.

It’s not on my door
I’ve looked:
Only a number to be found there.
Perhaps it’s hiding underneath
That marble-veined slab of rock,
But I’ll never know,
I can’t lift a marble-veined
Slab of rock on my own.

I won’t say goodbye,
I’ll just walk outside as usual–
A little chilly, but fresh air.
“Goodbye!”
“Goodbye!”
Let’s shake on it.
My name wasn’t there.

What’s that on your lips?

Oh my, it’s everything,
I can see everything
When I look at your lips.
There, that’s a grain of sand.
Is that the complete Shakespeare
On your lips?
Yes, it is, right there, next to
A wrinkle left by your pillow case.
The Taj Mahal is on your lips.
I didn’t know you had seen
That particular sunset,
You carry the memory of it on your lips.
The Star Spangled Banner et La
Marseillaise sont sur tes lèvres,
But my name-
I can't find my name on your lips.

Along the border of vermilion
And gathered at the cupid’s bow
Are epic myths and all your poems
Even a spot for me to leave
A verse and kiss upon,
But how to get the same in return?
No such is generated for someone
Without a name.

And what’s in a name but proof
That once we labored upon this earth
And took from it,

But also gave back if we were fortunate to know

Flesh to flesh we loved,
How well we loved!

I will continue hunting for my name.
This time, a search more thorough
Of your lips.
Perhaps it hides beneath
Your poems of unrequited love,
Although in truth, those are few.
Perhaps during a moment of secret
Anguish, your sigh displaced it, my name,
To an unexplored region
Of your enticing, endearing,
             they are so very delicious…

AT THE FOUNTAIN

oleander profusely
around the town square
along the marble paths
red oleander flower petals
on the pavement.
breeze of the afternoon
rambles along,
marigold’s pungent musk the
spray lifting from the fountain
stray with the breeze of the afternoon.

from nature,
emanating from its source
a sacrament ascends:

at the fountain
the water endless pours
cool and clear and cleansing
into the basin,
too shallow for a swim
but nice there to drown
oppressive thoughts- effortless
to rekindle tranquil ones-
overflows the marble lips, nearly,
always finds the exit path
a mouth sliced in the stone
liquid treasure flowing,
greening cobblestones,
slippery the moss.

quenching
women bound homeward with
loaves, black bread sesame bread
farmers led by thirsty burros,
burros
who toil and suffer and cry aloud
till death worked to death,
quenching
children who drink too often
to be thirsty,
quenching
poets who drink often
and are thirsty still
for pellucid, diaphanous water.

poets in patchwork skirts and lace
poets in faded denim bristled face,
muscles firm with resolve
lips marble, nearly,
till quenched, till loved,
poets eager at the fountain
treasure flowing from source-
torrid the harmony of the earth-
but grateful roots,
nothing parched

blooming oleander
sunburst marigold
water endless
life-giving

REQUEST

Love me as I love

This last rose, November’s orphan
Blossom of solitude growing
Without companions to witness

Velvet leaves and thorn protected stem reaching skyward

A late bloomer, lone adornment of my barren garden
Unaware of the season’s end, scavenging sunbeams
Unaware of its natural dignity and grace

Then love me as I love inhaling its damask fragrance

How it emanates from red imperial folds
Newly changed from bud into full blown
Bewitching beauty

A Light Patina

Footsteps

Heavy from rain
Light from the parting fog —
To a beach in winter
I am an imaginary visitor today

Seashells and pebbles crunch underfoot
Waves wash the shoreline
They make a rolling sound
They hiss, they whisper

Seagulls are early risers
They never tend to whisper

I wear your old black coat
Zips in the front, a light patina from use
Perfumed with time, travel and wind
The scent of coffee also

Farther down the walk is difficult
Boulders and beach-rock
The waves break with force

I keep going
